As they say, music is a universal language that transcends boundaries. It is truly appropriate for the creative pioneer behind the birth of Ziiki Media – one of the leading music distribution, production and record labels in Africa. African countries have a unique and diverse style of music that is gaining global appeal. Afrobeat and Afropop have become the predominant styles representing the continent as a whole. The genre has transcended international borders and global music charts. There is a lot of passion and intensity in African music.
Currently, music from African countries is gaining global appeal as a result of its beats. Ziiki Media as a brand thrives on the cultural ethos and diversity of the African continent. Ziiki Media is the parent label of Mziiki and has been working to put African music on the world map. They have a huge presence in six sub-Saharan countries: Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia under the brand name Mziiki.
Mziiki was launched as a music streaming app in 2014 for Sub-Saharan African music. Almost five years down the lane, Mziiki has established a strong digital presence and has a Youtube channel with more than 374k subscribers, a number that is growing every day. Music speaks louder than words and the digital platform has enabled music lovers from all over the world to enjoy and discover new music. Presence in East Africa
East Africa is considerably diverse and has an abundance of different musical traditions. The four countries in East Africa have different genres and each dominates the wave alternatively throughout the year. In Kenya, a new trend has emerged called Gengetone dominated by a very young clique of artists. Other countries in the region, such as Uganda and Rwanda, have dancehall, afrobeat and afro-soul. According to Felix Curtis, our Regional Manager for East Africa, “Tanzania has created a niche in afrobeat, dancehall and traditional styles such as taarab and dansi, a combination of which forms a unique style of music called Bongo Flava.” Diamond Platnumz, one of the biggest artists from Tanzania is connected to Ziiki Media and has over 2.9 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. Darassa, another artist from Tanzania associated with the brand, released his song Yumba featuring Harmonize. The song is already trending in the country. Vanessa Mdee is another famous singer and radio personality known internationally as well.
Ziiki Media is a platform that aims to provide opportunities to artists and uplift new and rising talent. We have also ventured into production, keenly investing in the digital space and developing substantial partnerships with major industry players.
Presence in West Africa
In West Africa, Ziiki Media is currently operating in Ghana and Nigeria. According to Obed Otoo, our content manager in Ghana, “Afrobeats and Afropop are two genres that currently dominate the music scene and Nigeria and Ghana are at the forefront of it.” Famous artists such as Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Burna Boy have gained global notoriety for their award-winning works and collaborations. Most musicians that are famous for Afrobeat and Afropop are from Nigeria or Ghana. Ziiki Media is willing to go the extra mile in these two countries which hold a lot of potential artists. As a brand, Ziiki has the requisite skills, resources and expertise to exceed artists’ digital expectations in terms of viewership and listenership across digital platforms. Recently, two artists from the Ziiki Media’s catalogue released their albums and both have gone viral. Parte after Parte by Big Tril is the current rage in Nigeria receiving high praise from such industry titans as Wizkid and Cardi B. The song has crossed a million streams on music stores and has over 1 million views on Youtube. Praiz, another large artist, released his album King after seven years and it has taken the music stores by storm.
Presence in Southern Africa
The Southern African music industry has evolved from being highly traditional to one where there are dozens of popular music styles and genres, including Blues, Kwaito, Trance, Hip-Hop, House, and the up and coming Amapiano. Songs like Abagez, Abajoli and Let It Be are creating massive waves across the global music scene. The Amapiano sound is re-forming the older House music in South Africa and taking over the summer. In the words of Arzia Nhapulo, our Regional Manager for Southern Africa, “Ziiki Media has gained significant market share; we have established ourselves well within Southern Africa partnering with two of the largest international labels present (UMG & Warner) and have formed strong partnerships with local labels and artists.” This has helped in establishing Ziiki Media as one of the best content aggregators and distributors in South Africa.
Music is the heartbeat of Africa. According to Arun Nagar, our CEO, “The culture and ethos of Africa are very diverse, and it directly reflects on their music.” This diversity inspired him to dive deep into the music industry, where he says he is, “fortunate to appreciate multiple markets in Africa in which each one is unique and yet there are similarities between arts, culture, and entertainment.” The footprint and distribution capacity of Ziiki differentiates it as a music brand from competitors. Over the years, the brand has established exclusive partnerships that allow it to be the sole distributor of certain content in some territories. Africa is a melting pot of culture and languages, something reflected in the diversity of its music. African artists are brewing magic with their music, embracing their heritage, expressing the vivid history and culture of their home.
